Iran & Renaissance

“Iranaissance” (Iran & Renaissance) is a story through photos, about the oppression women in Iran experience and their will to live freely. Protests during 2022-23 sparked by the murder of Mahsa Amini, have led to a global awakening about the social status of women in Iran and other eastern countries. This photo series aims to further spread the word and ultimately help these women have a better life. However, history has shown that only through great fights come great changes and this seems to be the case once more. Great fights have occurred and are still ongoing, however, impactful changes are yet to be seen.

All these years, spent in suffering and oppression, burden their souls. They are constantly observing us, without expressing their thoughts. They are constantly tolerating our behaviour, without taking any action.

The time has come now for them to express their thoughts without fear. The time has come now for them to decide what they will wear. The time has come now for them to wander the streets and talk freely.

The time has come now for them to uprise! All this anger and oppression is cracking through the walls of silence, like an unstoppable wave, which leads their way towards freedom, respect and equality.

Their fight will not be easy. Our minds are used to the current regime. We do not want to lose our convenience. We do not want to lose our power. We will fight back until they back down.

But this fight is meaningless. Their minds are already made up. They will keep on screaming until their voices are heard all over the world.

And even when they have no voice, their actions will speak louder.
Actions of courage.
Actions of dare.
Actions of redemption.

It is up to us now to listen to them. We cannot ignore them anymore. We cannot let them perish in vain. Otherwise, we and their oppressors will be be e equally guilty.

The unexpected

Some will argue that a tattoo does not fit this photo concept. Even I thought of removing it in Photoshop. But then, Katerina told me what it symbolises: The Orizuru (折鶴 “ori”-folded, “tsuru”-crane), or paper crane, in Japanese culture, is believed to carry the souls of the dead up to paradise.
